Boss Lessons to be Learned From Brunch

Last year, I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Boss Babe Brunch. I love brunch. It’s the perfect reward for a hard week of crushing goals and putting in work. A moment where options seem limitless. Savory, sweet, or maybe both because I earned it. You know what else I love about brunch? I love how much it compliments a boss lifestyle in a few key ways:

1. Get creative with what you dish out.

So what if there's someone who already makes what you make or does what you do? I’ve enjoyed eggs benedict over 10 different ways and none of them tasted exactly the same. Some were better than others. Some had more creative ingredients and flavor combinations. Overall they were delicious, and I still try them out expecting something slightly different everywhere I order them. Whatever your business is, focus on how you do it differently than anyone else. It doesn’t have to be just the flashy stuff either. What unique experiences or skills do you have that can be incorporated into your business offerings? Focus on that and the client that’s for you will eat it up.

2. Cultivate a good vibe.

I swear brunch spots double down on the decor and design budget intentionally. They play the latest and most lively music. The drinks are flowing. And, how many times have you had a server with a bad attitude during brunch time? (I’ll wait.) Going to brunch is an experience and it’s normally one that makes you feel good--luxurious even. You need to put that same intention into your business. How do clients feel when they engage with you? Do you display great customer service? Do you have nice marketing materials? Are people happy with what you deliver, eager to come back for more? The businesses that do this well don’t do it by chance. You’ve got to plan it out from lead generation to retention. Get feedback from past clients or ask colleagues what vibe you give off when you work on projects together.

3. Splurge on your vision.

Brunch is typically not an inexpensive activity--unless someone else is buying. You’re also normally starving from waiting until brunch time, which means you want to order everything. Don’t forget the upsell of the bottomless drinks. A good time and three hours later you’ve spent $40 or more and you seldom regret it. You can’t shortchange investing in your business. Even if you have the aptitude to learn and do a lot of things for yourself, it’s still not in the best interest of your time and energy to do it all. Hire experts to outsource. Get a coach. Invest in a team. Upgrade your equipment and materials. These things often help your business grow exponentially faster. A woman cannot live off french toast alone or pdf freebies.

4. Tell the people all about it!

At a brunch, a smartphone snapping an outfit selfie, a toast boomerang or a plate photo are  guaranteed sightings. People love to share their brunch behavior. Heck, I have well over 60 posts on my Instagram featuring my brunch plates from all over the world. From that, people hit me up for brunch recommendations because they see that I go to brunch. Do people know you own a business? Have you ever posted about it? How often do you talk about it? Have people you’ve worked with provided referrals? We live in such a heavily messaged society, so you have to show up and promote often if you want to make the sale, especially as a new business owner. At the very least, tell your clients to promote so it leads to more new clients and sales. Get some photos, business cards, graphics, etc. and put yourself out there on a consistent basis. Wanting to be seen isn’t bad for business, it’s essential.

I hope you keep these things in mind as you sip your next mimosa and update your business goals. And I hope to see you at the next Boss Babe Brunch in 2021!
